Cancer sucks.

Did we mention that already? We did, huh? Well guess what? It’s still true, and we’re saying it again.
It clobbers the patient, both physically and mentally, and it continues its nastiness by working to tear down those who support the patient. Family members work doubly hard in support, trying both to help and maintain the patient and to not lose control of their own lives and events. Every little event becomes something more dangerous, more complicated, more negative.
Opposing the negative, however, is the positive force of the support given by others. There are friends who offer to help with transportation; friends who knit soft hats for covering chemo-bald heads; other survivors who routinely check on the patient’s health and progress; the doctor who will offer up a smile and a high-five when a procedure goes well. Most of these friends are not even known by the patient herself, but by the family members who work to help and take care of her.
Though the negative side of cancer is huge, the magnitude of the positive support received from others is bigger. And for things like that, we give thanks.
